Well, one reason is that right now I am engaged in a life and death struggle for supremacy with a six year old laptop. Yes, I am trying to get the wife's machine hooked into the wonderful world of wide-pipe internet connectivity. My west coast daughter and her significant other (a very nice young man [at least from my viewpoint he is young]) installed a wireless router in my office. My machine is physically hooked up to it, but we're trying to get my wife's machine hooked up as well. Now the problem is that her ricketty old laptop is running Windows 98 and has soooo little memory available as to be...well...almost laughable. Now, the afore mentioned young man has offered a newer by about 4 years laptop which, while by industry standards is still a dinosaur, is lightyears ahead of what is currently on her desk. However, this wonderful machine won't be here for at least a couple of weeks...and maybe not until her birthday (many happy returns and all that...) Anyhow, the original wi-fi PCMCIA card they brought with them over the Christmas weekend did not work. Today, I received a replacement which, tra-la, at least has drivers for Win98. However, it still isn't seeing the router. Not only that, but when I tried to set things up, Win98 said that it needed to be networked, but it doesn't have at least three of the files necessary for that on the original disk. At least I can't find 'em. Y'know, this is sad. I used to be a cutting edge professional in this field. Now there are kids in elementary school who could probably do a better job than I am doing. Which is why I'm currently sucking down my second VOTR (that's Vodka-On-The-Rocks for the uninitiated) of the evening. Maybe if I am lubricated enough, I will be able to get this thing up and running. It would really be cool for my sweetie to have fast access to the outside. OK, so now I'm going to get on the phone with the daughter on the other side of the continent to see if we can get this sucker up and running. I'll report back tomorrow as to our progress....
