This is why I've been dragging my heels about upgrading to XP. I hate the fucking arrogance of this company. They want me to download something that may adversely impact some software which is, to me, at least, critical? Fuck them and the horse they rode in on. My daughter has purchased me a copy of XP Pro which should be arriving any day now. I need to upgrade because half the software I want to use these days doesn't support my old NT. Now, I know that most of said software will work, to one degree or another, on my NT platform, but, on the whole, the performance is less than optimum. DAMN! What I really want is for the primary operating system of all computers to be open source. What I want is a slick Linux environment that has the same functionality as Windows. Then let the programmers fight it out for dominance in the applications field. I'm going to "upgrade" my OS to XP when the package arrives. I am going to do my best to disable all the shit Microsoft has appended...like, for instance, the Automatic Update feature. I don't want my OS having anything to do with Redmond after I install it without my specific permission. Meanwhile, Linux is going on one of the older boxes and I will be trying to duplicate my online environment on that machine. As soon as I have the same online capabilities on my Linux machine as I do on the XP box, that machine becomes an unconnected game machine...or something similar. And, when I do get that thumping huge Dell machine I drool for, it will come as a blank slate upon which I will install Linux. Curse you, Red Baron!!
