Yes, the biggest threat to the U.S. today is a militant Islamic fundamentalist. It was not Saddam Hussein, a nominal Muslim (when it suited him) who was, pretty much, anathema to the militant wing of that faith. Sure, Hussein was a bad man who, without a doubt, needed to be brought to heel. However, Mr. Koch and Hono (see The Thoughts of Hondonius Aurelius) have it wrong here. First of all, we have a duty to hold the United States, and its current leadership, to the hightest standards of behavior known to man: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. If they don't live up to the ideals espoused in those documents, they are failing us and our promise as a country. Our current administration is doing just that: failing. We, therefore, are duty bound to hold them up to these standards. To put it another way, Mr. Bush and his administration do not define the United States. He lied to us; and those lies have not only been about the reasons to go to war. It is time to clean house at the top and try again. Our last president failed us because of personal weaknesses. This president is failing us because of his personal venality. OK. So now we try again with Mr. Kerry. The beauty of our system is that, every four years, we get to give the incumbent a job performance rating. This one gets a failing grade and early retirement, IMHO.
