The Mark(ings) of Zorro
"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."
H.L. Mencken

The Tempest

Rice versus Clarke: this should be interesting. What I want to see is whether Rice can defend when presented with what seems to be pretty incontrovertible facts which are, at best, damaging to the Bush presidency. The real question will be whether the 60 Minutes crew will be playing hardball or not. If they lob her soft questions and allow her relative freedom of movement, then 60 Minutes will be nothing more than an accomplice what Bush et al are doing to this country. If, however, they do play hardball, I suspect Rice will be left gasping like a fish out of water. What I really want to see is Ms. Rice interviewed live...no retakes, no prepared and scripted responses. When she is hit with (and I don't know how to say it other than...) incontrovertible facts, no matter how hard and fast she tap dances, she will not be able to undo the damage. And there will be damage as long as she is forced to keep spouting the administration's line, for that line has little or no basis in reality.

Now, I want everybody to think back to about this time of year in 1968. A sitting president, Lyndon B. Johnson, announced that he would not run again even if nominated, and, if elected, he would not serve. If the groundswell of disgust with Bush can grow to tsunami proportions, we could, possibly see something similar happen this year. I know it isn't likely, but hope does spring eternal in the human breast...
