This was originally posted on the blog space I was playing with over on Earthlink. Unfortunately, their interface and publishing tools leave a great deal to be desired. So, I am moving the few posts of interest which I have over there to this blog. It is better, in the long run, to have only one of these to worry about. The other day my store manager, who is thirty-something (I think) and reasonably literate (read politically more liberal than the current occupant of the White House), opined that Bush was, in fact, unbeatable this year and that the Democrats were going to advance a "throw-away" candidate. Then, once Bush was reinstalled in office, they would start concentrating on 2008. This scared the hell out of me because it sounded plausible. Not so much the "throw-away candidate" part as I don't think Dr. Dean or the other front runners consider themselves sacrifical lambs, but the fact that Bush might actually be unbeatable by anybody but the perfect candidate. The problem is that the Dems don't have a really strong leader. They have a number of people who are more or less at the same level vying for the top position. This is opening the party to internal debate, and exposing the candidates to more opportunities to put their feet in their mouths (ala Dr. Dean of late.) Now, since I consider Bush one of the most dangerous threats to the ideals this country was founded upon that I have seen in my lifetime...(well, Reagan came pretty close to capturing that title, but I think this Bush is worse than the Gipper.) He is creating a stratified social order the likes of which this country has never seen; even in the days of the great Robber Barons there was more openness to our social structure than the vision Mr. Bush is pushing. Therefore, I feel that it is imperative that the Democrat Party think about what it is doing. We need to get behind a strong leader, someone with the proven ability to lead, and then target Bush and not our own. Next post I'll start cheerleading for the man I think is best able to unseat Mr. Bush.
