Yesterday our store kicked off the new book fromWeird NJ. According to management, the event (a morning breakfast for store managers and others in the company) was a resounding success. This was the first event since the management "shakeup" at my store, so the new team was trying more than necessary to make the store picture perfect. The joke, of course, is that while the cosmetics of the store were great, staff morale is sinking to an all time low. I would bet that, by next spring, there will be only one or two of the store's original employees still there. God knows that, if I am not given what I have been promised, I will be one of those who leave. However, this time I will make sure that I have another job in hand before burning my bridges at B&N. It has only taken me fift-mumble years to learn that particular lesson... As for the the title of this little piece, I was thinking that any state that has a place called Pavement Narrows deserves a publication called "Weird NJ".
