The Mark(ings) of Zorro
"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."
H.L. Mencken

Can the Radical Right say "A Bridge too Far"?

It appears that the pit bull attack philosophy of the Radical Right is beginning to backfire on them. There are a number of new books, led by Al Franken's Lies: And the Lying Liars Who Tell Them...A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right that are standing up to the mendacity of the Coulters, Hannity's and O'Reillys of this world. While O'Reilly hustled to get out his "Who's Looking Out for You?", Peter Hart has come out with "The Oh Really? Factor: Unspinning Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly" which pretty much proves O'Reilly is a lying sack of excrement. Personally, I think that George Bush and his fellow travellers on the right have done more damage to this country in the past three years than Reagan did in eight years...and Ronnie came within an inch of bankrupting the country. (However, this is not to denegrate his achievement in bankrupting the Soviet Union instead. He took a gamble and he won: history does reward the audacious.)

I think that this year's Democratic race for the nomination will be some of the most interesting politics we have had in this country in a long time. I do hope, however, that the Radical Left does not hi-jack the Democratic Party like it did in 1972. I worked my butt off for McGovern that year even though I did not think he was playing with a full deck sometimes. As we well know, he got crushed...and would have been crushed even without the aid of Nixon's Dirty Tricks gang. In other words, first I am hoping that Wesley Clark is, in fact, a Democrat and not a Moderate Republican in sheeps clothing, and, second, that we as a party realize that taking back the Congress and the White House are more important than strict ideological purity. Given the fiscal support a viable candidate needs and given that he gets his name and face into the voting public's memory, he has the best chance at unseating Shrub in 2004. Let's make one term presidencies a family tradition for the Bushes.
