How have five days gone by since I posted last? I have been somewhat busy, sure...but I have had time to write a couple lines. Mea culpa! Work: One of the store's department managers (lowest rung on the salaried employee/management ladder) has given his notice because he was offered a better job (more money--better hours) and the other one is under consideration for a promotion to Assistant Store Manager at his old store. If he gets it, that'll leave my store with two management position vacancies. I have given my store manager a memo requesting that I be considered for promotion. I know that I could do the job well and that I would be an asset to the store. Thing is, there are only two of us in this store who are being considered now that the Children's department lead has taken herself out of the running (personal considerations...) If I get this, my income will almost double and, if I can get my butt in gear and start trading again (I find that I am somewhat gunshy right now...DOH!) that could bring our household income back to what it was two years ago. That would be very, very nice since it would mean that we could dig our way out of the hole I dug us into over the 2000-2002 period. I read a Blog by a person who works for my company in a city to the south of me. She hates it and is actively trying to get shed of the bookselling business. I don't find it all that bad. Sure, we deal with our share of very ugly people, but I don't count physical appearance in there (in fact, some of the nicest people I deal with are the least physically attractive.) It is the people who treat us badly either by trying to scam us and rip us off, or who treat the booksellers like inferiors who are the ugly Americans I meet. (The truth is that most of the booksellers are probably better educated and more intelligent than a majority of our customers.) Anyhow, I wouldn't mind making this my "regular" job for the next 10-15 years (assuming I last that long...sheesh!) if I can arrange to do a couple other things--like write and do a little daytrading--on the side. Write: I have about 6 novels in the early stages of development (the one furthest along has about 9 chapters out of an expected 30 through the first draft stage.) They are all at least 10 years old because I haven't worked on any of 'em in about that much time. A couple of them were actually started on my original Apple //e, so that means they are getting close to being 20 years in development. I don't know if I will ever finish any of them...or if any should be finished. I am pretty sure that the only way I'll ever get published is to go the vanity press route. Then again, if I stay in the bookselling business, I may meet somebody...*sigh*. Anyhow, I do have a couple chapters of one of my nascent novels posted on my Diaryland site. Maybe one day I'll post that address here...*snicker*. Oh well, it's late and, even though I intended to write a bunch more, I think it'll have to wait until the morrow. G'night Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are...(I think that's how that went...)
