The Mark(ings) of Zorro
"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."
H.L. Mencken

What a difference

I was listening to some soundbites of speeches by John F. Kennedy and comparing them to speeches by George W. Bush. Well, comparing is not an apt word in this instance simply because there is none: comparison, that is.

Don't get off on what a bad man JFK was, what with all the women the secret service was supposed to have ferried in and out of the White House. While JFK might have had an overactive libido, I once read that great men tended to fall to the extremes of the sexual activity spectrum. In other words, they tend to be either satyrs or celibates. Few truly great men lead what we like to think of as "ordinary" sex lives. Listen to his words and his thoughts and leave his sex life where it should be...behind closed doors.

Anyhow, I was listening to JFK and it struck me how liberalism has suffered in the past 40 years. Kennedy was the last true liberal to hold the office of the Presidency, and that is why liberal ideals and liberals themselves have become fair game for the true enemy out there: the conservatives. Conservatives want nothing less than total and absolute control over the rest of humanity. When they complain about taxes, what they are really saying is that they want a bigger slice of the pie and screw the rest of you. If your kids have to live in poverty, sickness and dispair just so the conservative can hang out at the country club, then sobeit. They want you/us to slave our lives away making things rosey for them, period. And the shame of it all is that the rest of us seem to be buying their garbage.

Well, I, for one, am sick and tired of being told that wanting a decent minimum standard of living for all is wrong. If one does even a cursory examination of every major religion in the world, one finds caring for one's fellow humans is right up at the top of the list of virtues in all of them. And yet the political right, the reactionaries who would be happy to go back to a feudal model of society so long as they were on top of the heap, try to make the oppression and exploitation of their fellow citizens fit in with the "will of God." It is sure that the Jewish prophets, Christ and his apostles, Mohammed and his followers, Buddha nor any Hindu teachings support the current conservative political agenda in this country, so it is time for the churches, temples and synagogues to actively combat this message.

It is time for people like me to begin to fight back against the assault by people like Savage, Coulter and the rest. If you believe in the dignity and worth of all humans; if you believe that we are "all created equal in the eyes of God", then it is now time to stand up and add your voice against the attack dogs of the right. I sure intend to do just that a lot more. No longer will I shut up to avoid a confrontation. People who are buying that tripe need to be told that there is an alternative--an alternative which lifts us out of self absorbtion and opens the door to a more fulfilling life. Remember that all the riches in the world won't do you a damn bit of good when you take that last breath.
