The Mark(ings) of Zorro
"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

Doom and Gloom and the Christmas Retail Season

So, I was listening to the talking heads on CNBC earlier today, and all I heard was doom and gloom: This is going to be such a bad Christmas season at the retailers and yada-yada. Then I got in my car and tried to drive around my corner of New Jersey at about 12:30. The roads, especially those leading to malls, shopping centers and other retail destinations were packed. The parking lots were packed. The stores were packed. I did what shopping I could face, and then I split.

A little later, coming home from saying hi to my sister and family who are spending the Holidays up at my Mom's in Bedminster, I got off 287 at the Bridgewater Mall (rtes 202/206) exit and, at 2:45 came to a complete stop. The bottleneck, it turned out, was the Somerville Circle. It took me 1/2 an hour to drive a mile and a half. And it was pretty much all mall/shopping center traffic, people. Later, I went in to work at my place of employment (OK, Barnes & Noble, the bookstore people.) We were steadily busy from when I arrived at 5pm until we closed at 11. And we had a banner day at the registers. So, anecdotally, my experience this Christmas retail season has been that it is doing quite well, thank-you. I'll bet that last weekend and the Monday/Tuesday of this week will provide enough oomph to make most of the big retailers beat their overly pessimistic sales forecasts when they report next month.
