So, yesterday, for the ten thousandth time, I clicked on a link in an email (one of the half dozen newsletters I still get) and, as usual, Internet Explorer opened even though I had two other browsers already open at that point. Well, that was the straw that broke this particular camel's back. I've been using Eudora as my email client for about 8 months now, and have been very happy with it except for the propensity to use MSIE as it's browser when clicking on most links in emails. But enough is enough--this had to stop. So, I stopped what I was doing and began to explore the situation. It took all of about 3 minutes to determine that Eudora pretty much depends on the "Microsoft Viewer" to provide formatting for email messages which are anything more than plain text. If you rely on Eudora's internal viewer (this is the freebie version we're talking about), you pretty much lose all formatting in a post. The downside to this is that, unless the link specifies a browser (which can be done but most people don't bother), Eudora will use MSIE. This I didn't want. It was time to see about configuring the Netscape email client. OK, it wasn't hard to do the initial configuring or to import my email address book. Right off the bat, I noticed that there were a few things Netscape did that Eudora didn't, and, for the most part, they were/are positive things. Anyhow, I am now using the Netscape email client and when I click on a link, it opens the link using the Netscape browser. BTW, for any who are interested, I am using Netscape v7.0 and I have found it to be both stable and relatively easy to use. I was most unhappy with the Netscape v6.x iterations, but I think they have fixed most of the glaring faults with this pass. Of course, the most recent version of MSIE I have is v5.something so I'm probably two versions behind there. It's just that I don't want to use the Microsoft product on gerneral principle. In fact, I am hoping that a couple of my specific Christmas requests are going to be met. If they are, I will have a home network based on Linux (network server and gateway/router with one Linux and two Windows workstations) by the end of the month. If not, this little project might take a little longer, but it will be done eventually.
