We are turning into a country of wusses, and that alone is degrading the quality of our lives. In a relentless attempt to make the world "safe" (and, consequently, to increase the amount of time we can expect to spend in this plane of existence) we are making it (life) dull. The latest outrage is the banning of games like tag and dodge ball from school playgrounds. How stupid can some people get??? And on a similar subject, one of the things I have learned since starting work as a parttime "bookseller" for Barnes & Noble is that there is a children's book category known as "banned and challenged". It includes titles like "Tom Sawyer" and "Huckleberry Finn" among others. Seems that Mark Twain used the "N" word (sigh) in these books and some parents/school boards feel that our children should not encounter this. I don't know about the rest of you, but I read both of these books before I hit 12 years old, and I did not grow up to be a racist bigot. Kids can understand that some things that were done "back then" were not particularly nice if that is explained to them before they start reading. But, no, we're turning into a country of wusses. On other fronts, I have had to brave the local traffic circle on a daily basis for the last two weeks now, and I am again amazed at how freely we distribute driver licenses to people who, obviously, should not be let anywhere near the driver's seat. I try very hard not to stereotype classes of people as "bad drivers" but there are groups who seem to stand out as really rotten motorists. You know who they are, right? I don't have to get myself in "politically correct" hot water here, do I? If they had a pedestrian bridge over 202/206, I would walk to work and eschew the car altogether, but crossing that thoroughfare on foot is even more life threatening than is braving the circle in a vehicle. OK, enough moaning for today. I'll try to post something a little more upbeat later on...although with the continued gloating by the Republicans, I still find it hard to come up with much enthusiasm about life in general these days...damn!
