The first thing that comes to mind is that this is actually not a recent death. The party has been on life support for quite a while, and there have even been a couple times where it appeared to be recovering. But all the past signs of life have been proven to be merely autonomous reflexes firing every now and then. There was an instance in '76, but that proved to be an anomaly in the system. There was real hope in '92, but by even as early as '94 it could be seen that the party was slipping back into its coma. Actually, upon reflection, it appears that the brain has been dead for some time now. While the fatal wound was delivered in '72, the party had already suffered grievous damage as far back as '68. It was in that year that Bobby Kennedy (our heir apparent) was killed, the king (LBJ) abdicated and the party turned on itself in the streets of Chicago. Four years later, George McGovern and the radical left wing of the party administered the coupe de grace. McGovern's humiliating defeat that year was followed closely by the Watergate fiasco. Note that, even though the Democrats won that particular battle, they radicalized and energized the extreme right wing of the Republican party. It was what could be called a pyrrhic victory. The Carter presidency was, in fact, the last gasp of the old Democrat party. The conservative right found their white knight in Reagan, and the rout was on. The conservative wing of the Republican party advanced their agenda and the Democrats were reduced to fighting a rear guard action against the worst excesses of the right without ever really establishing a coherent agenda of their own. Then came 1992, and there was hope once again.
